Fireplace Accessories
When you are looking at installing a fireplace you will notice that there are dozens of different fireplace accessories available for you to purchase. We will go into detail on a few of them that we like. The most important accessory that you should buy is a fireplace screen. Screens prevent embers from falling to the carpet and also help stop sparks from leaving the hearth. Sometimes screens are described as doors, but we think they should be considered separately. Screens are usually made from a type of mesh and can be sat in front of the fireplace without being attached to the hearth. There are many decorative styles available to the consumer. Please see the separate article devoted to this subject.
Fireplace tools are another necessity if you have a fireplace or wood stove. These tools generally come on a stand and consist of a poker, shovel, brush and tongs. Fireplace sets are available in many styles and finishes from modern to antique, wrought iron to brass and pewter. Just make sure that the stand is fairly heavy in weight so that it doesn’t fall over when you remove one of the accessories.
When you are looking at fireplace accessories have a look at a set of andirons. They were originally used to hold the logs in place but since the use of fireplace grates are not used as often. We like the look of andirons in front of the hearth and you will be amazed at how they finish off the look of your hearth. Andirons are available in many styles and finishes. If you are into pets you can even find andirons that fit that theme.
Other important fireplace accessories are log carriers and hearth racks. We like the racks that have removable canvas carriers that are so convenient for carrying the wood from the wood shed to the fireplace. If you use a carrier you are less likely to have bits and pieces of bark and wood chips all over your floor.
If you have trouble keeping the fire going, maybe you would like to invest in a fireplace bellow. They are great for giving a bit of extra air to help your fire start. Just don’t let the kids get hold of it, they will love playing with bellows and you will never see the bellows again!
The last two accessories we want to tell you about are match holders and popcorn poppers. Match holders are the best place to keep your fireplace matches. Some are available with lids to keep them hidden from children. They are also available in many styles and finishes. Lastly, try making popcorn over an open flame with a fireplace popcorn popper. It is a fun treat on a cold night; just make sure you use the type that is meant for an open fire.
