Fireplace Inserts - A Simple Alternative

While the traditional masonry fireplace is still very popular all over the world, there is a growing trend towards using fireplace inserts.  In most cases, traditional fireplaces are used only occasionally.  When they are not in use, the heat from the room is drawn up the chimney thereby costing more to heat the home.  When the fireplace is in use, some will say that not a lot of heat is given up.  If you think this is the case consider installing a fireplace insert in your hearth.

Fireplace inserts generally fall into two categories:  those that fit right into the old fireplace and those that stick out slightly from the hearth.  We prefer those that stick out onto the hearth as they provide more radiant heat from the top and sides of the unit.  The more efficient insert will also have a blower to move the heat into the room more effectively.  Some of these inserts have the look of a wood stove and can add a lot of charm to your décor.  Wood burning inserts are not as efficient as direct vent gas fireplaces.  Direct vent gas fireplaces have glass doors which prevent gases from leaking into the room and vent the heat into the room more effectively.

Make sure you use a qualified fitter when installing your fireplace insert.  Regulations require that there must be a connection between the insert and the first section of the flu.  Usually, a steel liner vents the gas and smoke up the chimney so that all combustibles are removed.

Fireplace inserts will set you back a bit money wise with starting prices around $1100 going up to about $2000.  Consider this cost an investment, it will certainly add to the value of your home.  With many styles to choose from you will find a fireplace insert to fit your décor, from formal to rustic.  Then, just sit back in your easy chair and enjoy the warmth and charm that a fireplace adds to your home.
