Fireplace Rugs

When your fireplace is in operation you should have a fireplace rug to protect your floor surface and in particular from starting a fire or logs from rolling out of the fireplace and ruining your carpet. There are some special requirements that you should look for when shopping for fireplace rugs.  Make sure that the rug is made specifically for a fireplace hearth rather than just being a regular floor mat.

Fireplace rugs should be fire-resistant meaning that it will take a very high temperature before it begins to burn.  We have found that those rugs made from fiberglass are the best quality that you can get as they are extremely fire resistant.  Rugs made from natural fiber wool are the next best quality as they do not melt like synthetic fibers. Wool rugs will singe when embers land on them but they will not burn through.   The singed fiber can usually be brushed off.   You can also buy rugs made from Olefin and nylon although they are of a lesser quality and will melt much easier.
