Gas Fireplaces - Popular for a Reason

Gas fireplaces are probably the most popular type of fireplaces on the market today.  They are clean burning, efficient and convenient. The three main styles available are fireplace inserts for a traditional fireplace, free-standing and factory built.  If you wish to read about fireplace inserts please see the separate article on this website.  Free-standing gas fireplaces are very often in the style of woodburning stoves.  They are very effective in giving off heat to warm a room.

Many types will offer thermostats to regulate the heat and even remote control devices to regulate the size of the flame as well as turn the fire on and off.  Most models today also include a fan to allow for better heat distribution as they force heat into the room.  Make sure you try out the fan in the showroom as some of them can be fairly noisy.

We like the vented gas logs that are available today.  These units can be used with either propane or natural gas.  The vented logs allow built up gassed to pass up the chimney in the same way that a regular woodburning fireplace does.

You can still use a gas fireplace even if you don't have a chimney with a vent.  A top venting or a direct venting pipe can be installed onto your gas unit to vent the gases out of the house.  Make sure you have the venting pipes installed by a qualified technician to eliminate the chances of carbon monoxide build up if it is not installed correctly.

Before you think about installing a gas fireplace do some research into the energy ratings.  Check also that the gas fireplace meets all safety regulations for your area.  If you live in a condominium complex you may not be allowed to install a gas fireplace.
